Championship leader Mika Hakinnen took pole for tomorrow's Grand Prix after an exiting qualification. Teammate Coulthard was second fastest and Fisichella drove to a superb third place. Michael Schumacher was fourth. Worldchampion Villeneuve was back to 13th postition. Rosset (Tyrrell) didn't qualify himself for the second time this season.

May 23                Benetton star Fisichella fastest in final free practice

Giancarlo Fisichella was fastest in today's free practise. The young Italian was just ahead of David Coulthard. Salo was third which was very good for him and the team.  Mika Hakinnen was only in seventh position. Ferrari driver Schumacher had some carproblems and couldn't drive a lap.

May 22                Flavio is back!

Flavio Briatore is back in business. Super Performance Competition Engineering owner Briatore has clinched a deal with Mecachrome. Briatore’s company is going to manage the distribution of the former Renault engines. The deal starts in 1999 and the engines will be called Supertec Sports then.
Both Benetton and Williams are complaining about the quality of the Mecachrome engine, because they think the engines aren't being developed enough by Mecachrome.

May 21                Hakkinen sets pace in second free practice

Mika Hakkinen was first in the second free practice of the Monaco Grand Prix. Giancarlo Fisichella drove superbly to the 2nd place. McLaren driver David Coulthard was third with Frentzen behind him. Schumacher was dropped back from first to fifth despite hydraulic problems. Team mate Irvine was sixth.

May 21                Schumi and Hakkinen fastest, crash Hill
 
Michael Schumacher was fastest in today's first free-practise. The German was only one tenth of a second ahead of championship leader Mika Hakkinen. Both drivers were more than 1,5secs ahead of Frentzen who did a great job by driving the third time. Coulthard was only fourth.
Damon Hill crashed with his Jordan Mugen and damaged his nose cone. Minardi driver Tuero was having technical problems, so he couldn't take part in today's first practice.

May 20                Ferrari accused!

Ferrari is accused of using an illegal braking system. About a month ago the braking system was banned by the FIA, but a photo of the San Marino Grand Prix shows Schumacher's Ferrari with just one glowing brake disc. This points out that just one brake disc was used during the braking, which was the main thought of the banned braking system that was used by McLaren and some other teams. However it's not sure that Ferrari used this system, because the FIA examined the car before the race and nothing was found. The FIA will check the Ferrari thoroughly next race.

May 20                Verstappen wins by K.O.

It is said that Dutchman Jos Verstappen hit somebody after a friendly go-kart race in Belgium. The man wasn't even supposed to race because Verstappen and a few friends reserved the track for an exclusive race. The man however took place in a go-kart and blocked Verstappen during the whole race. This upset the Dutch Benetton testdriver and it came to little riot. Afterwards the man accused Verstappen of hitting him in the face. However Verstappen denies the blow, he admitted the quarrel.

May 19                Monaco circuit changed

The Monaco circuit is a little different from last year. Changes were made near the swimming pool. The Nouvelle Chicane was made 3,3 meters longer. It's second time in two years that this point has been altered. After losing his "busstop-chicane"-like character the chicane was now found a little bit dangerous. The cars now have more space to drive into the Nouvelle Chicane, when they have left the famous tunnel.
